The Industrial Democracy in Europe project offers participants a unique opportunity to assess the changes in European industrial relations systems in general, and participation schemes in particular. This is a follow-up study to “Industrial Democracy in Europe” (OUP 1981), offering readers empirically-based data on how things changed in the turbulent decade of the 1980s. In 1981, the Industrial Democracy in Europe team (IDE) reported their findings on the extent of industrial demcracy in ten European countries during the 1970s. The present volume reports the findings for the subsequent decade. By any standards the 1980s were a decade of change and turbulence – a shift in political power, the widespread implementation of information technology, the growth of unemployment, increasing competition and short product life-cycles. It is therefore particularly useful to have a longitudinal research project that analyzes the change in particulation schemes. The research team have looked at ten European countries (including Poland and Yugoslavia) and also comment on the situation in Israel and Japan.
