While doctors through the ages have thought that they had based their practice on evidence, a new movement based on the ideas of the Scottish doctor Archie Cochrane has shown that this might not be the case. The core of evidence-based medicine is the formulation of a question relevant to a clinical problem, then researching around this problem selecting the best type evidence from explicit criteria, and finally the making of decisions based on patients’ values.
