In 1996, several female faculty members at MIT released an alarming report charging institutionalized discrimination at the university. Not only did male faculty members outnumber female faculty members 252 to 22, but there were large compensatory discrepancies between men and women of equal rank and seniority – from better pay to more lab space and research assistants. In The Science Glass Ceiling , Sue Rosser chronicles the plight of women faculty across the US, noting the difficulties, double standards and backlash they routinely face. Rosser interviewed some of the USA’s best female scientists about their research, love of science and routine barriers faced. She offers suggestions and solutions for changing the science and technology culture at universities in order to establish a more level playing field. As the first woman Dean at an American science/technical school, Rosser offers realistic solutions from an insider’s perspective.
